Prof. Michael Saliba Visited Our Group and Delivered an Invited Talk on “The Versatility of Perovskite Materials for Optoelectronics"

CeNS Colloquium & SES Series: Prof. Michael Saliba Visits LMU Munich

We were honored to host Prof. Michael Saliba from the University of Stuttgart and Forschungszentrum Jülich as the 14th speaker of our Solar Energy Seminar Series (SES Series). This special session was organized in close collaboration with the Center for NanoScience (CeNS) Colloquium and the LMU Faculty of Physics.

The event took place on Friday, May 08, 2026, drawing a fantastic audience both at the Baeyer Lecture Hall (Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy) and online via Zoom. The seminar was proudly hosted and invited by Dr. Esma Uğur and Dr. Erkan Aydın.

Exploring the Versatility of Perovskite Materials

Prof. Saliba delivered an insightful and inspiring talk titled "The Versatility of Perovskite Materials for Optoelectronics". Perovskite solar cells (PSCs) have taken the research community by storm, attracting spotlight attention due to their remarkable optoelectronic properties. During his presentation, Prof. Saliba provided a comprehensive historic overview of this rapid development and highlighted the unique material characteristics that make perovskites so attractive for cutting-edge photovoltaic applications.

Addressing the current bottlenecks in the field, he discussed advanced multicomponent systems (incorporating Rb, Cs, MA, and FA perovskites) that achieve superior performance, excellent reproducibility, and enhanced resilience against external stressors. He also shared innovative strategies to master complex crystallization behaviors by managing solvent coordination (such as removing strongly complexing DMSO molecules) to significantly elevate film quality.

Finally, Prof. Saliba introduced a novel, non-chemical approach to interface manipulation: using light annealing (laser polishing) on top of the formed perovskite layers to successfully suppress surface recombination and advance cell efficiency even further.

Science, Sunshine, and Barbecue

Following the stimulating scientific discussion and an engaging Q&A session, the seminar transitioned into a relaxed networking event. The host groups and attendees gathered in front of the faculty building for a sunny afternoon barbecue. It was a fantastic opportunity for students, researchers, and Prof. Saliba to wind down, discuss new ideas casually, and enjoy some grilled food and refreshments together.
