Seminar Highlight: Prof. Monica Morales-Masis from University of Twente on Laser-Deposited Perovskites

July 18, 2025

We were delighted to host Prof. Monica Morales-Masis from the University of Twente, MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology, for an inspiring seminar titled:
"From Polycrystalline to Epitaxial Metal Halide Perovskites via Laser Deposition."

In her talk, Prof. Morales-Masis presented cutting-edge research on the vapor-phase deposition of metal halide perovskite (MHP) thin films, focusing on the unique advantages of pulsed laser deposition (PLD). This physical vapor deposition technique allows for precise stoichiometric control using a single solid target — a significant challenge in perovskite fabrication due to precursor volatility.

She highlighted how PLD enables the synthesis of both 2D and 3D perovskite layers with excellent compositional fidelity, demonstrating device integration with power conversion efficiencies exceeding 19%. Notably, her group achieved room-temperature epitaxial growth on lattice-matched substrates, paving the way for strain engineering and advanced optoelectronic device applications.

The talk sparked engaging discussions on the future of laser-based, scalable, and compositionally tunable deposition methods for next-generation perovskite technologies.

We thank Prof. Morales-Masis for sharing her exciting work and insights with our community.
